Can We Trust Even When Life Feels Scary?

I used to think that if I planned well enough, I could keep my life safe and steady. I thought being in control was the same as being happy. Life doesn’t always follow our plans. Lately, my world has felt like a storm. Between the deaths of five people, my son’s transition after prison, and my sister’s diagnosis with breast cancer, the ground has felt very shaky. I’ve learned that when the world is chaotic, I can’t control what happens outside. Instead, I am continuing on my journey as the “architect” of my own heart.

When things feel overwhelming, we often find ourselves in a knot of Thoughts, Emotions, and Actions (T.E.A.). Our thoughts try to anticipate the “what-ifs,” emotions feel heavy, and actions become frantic as we try to fix things we cannot control. Being an architect isn’t about stopping the storm. It’s about building a strong, safe house inside ourselves so we can stay standing while the wind blows.

I can’t change a medical diagnosis or a legal situation; however, I can choose how I show up for myself and the people I love.

Trusting isn’t about knowing exactly how things will turn out. It’s about knowing that I have the strength to handle whatever happens next. It’s about being kind to myself, setting boundaries that protect my heart, and finding peace in the middle of the mess.

It is why I wrote my 4-week course.  If you are going through a hard season and feel like you’re losing your footing, I want to help. My T.E.A. Course is a place to learn to untangle our thoughts, emotions, and actions to find your calm again. I’d love for you to join the healing journey.

How about a change-up in topics today? Two weeks ago I shared how I set and achieved a goal. Before that, I shared more “ahas” learned at the Global Leadership Summit. I believe this event made such a huge impression on me because the variety of themes constructed a complex quilt of good sense. So let’s take a break from actions and look at the following words…

Take a nap. Go to sleep. That is the new hustle. Take care of yourself.

This comes from Albert Tate who states that napping is the new hustle. I don’t know about you, but in the past, I felt like I had to be busy all the time. It always left me overwhelmed and exhausted which lowered my productivity. But take a nap? No way! I would feel too guilty to do that!

One thing I did work on was my bed and wake-up times to try to get eight hours of sleep. That helped. Yet it didn’t erase the midday sluggishness completely. When I listened to Albert’s talk, it gave me permission to take a nap if I felt like it. You see, our brains are mini computers and need to be reset. Healthy leaders have healthy rhythms of rest. If you’re feeling tired or sluggish, go ahead and nap in the middle of the day. Rest equals freedom and you will end up going out in a season of abundance…

And be sure to take a day off now and then. The fact is, you can’t afford to NOT take a day off once in a while.

One last thing.

It’s OK to not be OK. We all have experienced loss, especially since Covid. Grieve it, heal from it, and let others in. This might include counseling. I did this for a year and a half in 2018 and 2019. It helped me heal and be honest not only with myself, but with others. As I’ve mentioned before, I am not a certified counselor, however, I do have lots of life experiences so feel free to reach out and talk with me to explore what you want to do with your life.
