If someone asked you to describe the effect of the pandemic in one or two sentences, what would you say? Chances are it would include something like how hard it was, or that it was an unhappy time for so many people. While all that may be true, let’s look at the blessings that also came out of it. I’m talking about a huge shift that could be viewed as a positive development which continues to grow.

In the last few years, there’s been a dramatic rise of startup businesses – currently called the “gig economy.” Gig economy is defined by people working on short-term contracts or freelancing instead of a permanent job. As temporary work with greater flexibility, this allows people to be creative and take charge of their finances – giving them more freedom to decide what to do with their lives.
Here’s what the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) noted earlier…
“Despite a health catastrophe and one of the worst economic downturns in modern history, startup business activity grew in the United States last year—business startups grew from 3.5 million in 2019 to 4.4 million in 2020, a 24 percent increase…”’
And then there’s inflation. No matter who you are or how you live, everyday expenses are higher which creates fertile ground to make changes.
So where am I going with this?
When I started selling Avon, our biggest competitors were companies who sold similar products. Now our competitors are companies that help define the gig economy. For example, drivers like Uber and Lyft; home maintenance businesses like house painting; and education in the form of personal tutoring. For some, this is a full-time occupation. For others, it’s a part-time ‘gig’ to supplement daily expenses.
Not all Avon reps are full-time like me. I have a team of people where each person is unique. One of the reasons I promote Avon is because of the incredible flexibility each and every rep has.
